KAU scholar gets patent on cognitive radio technology

A staff member of the Jeddah-based King Abdulaziz University has been granted a patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office for creating a new cognitive radio sensing method, according to local media. Dr. Ahmed M. Barnawi of the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology at KAU has reportedly conducted his work using the software-defined radio technology.

Apple snags smartwatch patent

Apple has obtained a patent from the US Patent and Trademark Office for a smart wristwatch with support for arm gestures and circuitry built into its strap. In the patent, the electronic device "can utilize the additional electrical circuitry or devices provided within the electronic wristband to augment the capabilities of the electronic device."

The long-rumored iWatch may not be called the iWatch after all. The US Patent and Trademark Office just granted Apple a patent for a smartwatch today , revealing some interesting features. Via Bluetooth, this smartwatch can connect to a mobile device and allow the user to control basic smartphone functions, such as viewing notifications and answering or declining phone calls.

Patent changes expected to have widespread effects

Over the coming six months, the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office will change the standard under which patents are granted, as well as adding a new process for invalidating them. Local intellectual property attorneys say the immediate effects will be widespread, ranging from a bottleneck of applications to get in under the old rules to a whole different approach to filing for patents.
